What is a parish nurse?
The parish nurse is an experienced registered nurse
who has additional education in parish nursing and is committed to the
health, caring and healing ministry consistent with the church's mission.
She works in partnership with the pastors, other ministries and volunteers
who share their time and talents.
What is the role of the parish nurse at Oak Grove?
The focus of this ministry is on health promotion,
wellness and preventive care. It is not a substitute for pastoral care,
medical care, community health nursing or social agencies, but rather
works in partnership with these services. The parish nurse does not provide
hands-on care and does not replace any health care service. Instead, her
role encompasses these areas:
Health Educator
Coordinator of Visitation Volunteers
Interpreter of the close relationship
between faith and health.
Works in partnership with the pastor,
church staff and health professionals.
Referral source/Advocacy
What is the cost of using this program?
No charge.
What is the history of parish nursing?
The church has been an essential part of healing
and caring for people by establishing the first hospitals, hospices and
long-term care facilities. Over time, the church stepped out of this role
and healing became the task of medical professionals and clinical institutions.
It has been recognized that technology cannot provide everything. People
of faith have reclaimed their call by God to minister to one another and
have realized that health is more than just the physical - it encompasses
the wellness of body, mind and spirit.
